There are 3 different legends that tell about the origin of Valentine's day ... choose the one you prefer. Remember that aside from that, any day can be Valentine days. So, we can begin from this one:

1 - Legend of the Rose of Reconciliation

One day, St Valentine heard two young engaged couples walking past her garden, arguing. He decided to go to meet them with a magnificent rose in his hand. He gave the rose to the two engaged couples and begged them to be reconciled by tightening the stem of the rose together, taking care not to prick each other and praying that the Lord would keep their love alive forever. Some time later the young couple returned to him to invoke the blessing of their marriage. The story spread and the inhabitants began to go on pilgrimage to the bishop of Terni on the 14th of each month. The 14th of each month thus became the day dedicated to blessings, but the date was restricted to the month of February only because on that day in 269 AD. San Valentino di Terni died.

2 - Legend of Sublime Love

This legend tells of a young Roman centurion named Sabino who, walking through a square in Terni, saw a beautiful girl named Serapia and fell madly in love with her. Sabino asked Serapia's parents to be able to marry her but was refused: Sabino was a pagan while Serapia's family was of Christian religion. To overcome this obstacle, the beautiful Serapia suggested to her beloved to go to their Bishop Valentino to get closer to the religion of his family and to receive baptism, which he did in the name of her love. Unfortunately, just as the celebrations for Sabino's baptism (and for the upcoming wedding) were being prepared, Serapia fell ill with consumption. Valentino was called to the bedside of the now dying girl. Sabino begged Valentino not to be separated from his beloved: life without her would have been only a long suffering. Valentine baptized the young man and joined the two in marriage and as he raised his hands up for the blessing, a beatific sleep enveloped those two hearts for eternity.

3 - Children's Legend

San Valentino had a large garden full of magnificent flowers where he allowed all the children to play. He often looked out of his window to watch them and to rejoice in seeing them play. As evening fell, he went down to the garden and all the children surrounded him with affection and joy. After giving the blessing, he gave each of them a flower recommending that they bring it to their mothers: in this way he obtained the certainty that they would return home soon and that they would nurture respect and love for parents. From this legend derives the custom of giving small gifts to the people we love.
